What Is a Blind Spot?
A blind spot is any area around your vehicle that cannot be seen through your mirrors or directly through the windshield. Despite what many drivers assume, mirrors do not provide complete coverage — they leave gaps, particularly to each side and slightly behind the vehicle. Any car, cyclist, pedestrian, or object sitting in that gap becomes invisible to the driver without an additional head check.

Where Blind Spots Form and Which Vehicles Have the Largest Ones
For a standard passenger car, the primary blind spots sit at approximately the 7–8 o'clock and 4–5 o'clock positions relative to the driver — roughly where the rear side windows end and the rear quarter panels begin. A second blind spot forms directly in front of the hood at close range, which matters when pulling out of a tight parking space with children or small objects nearby.
Vehicle type significantly affects blind spot size:
- SUVs and pickup trucks have elevated seating that improves forward sightlines but creates larger rear quarter blind spots due to their taller body structures.

Blind spot

The body panel on either side of a vehicle between the rear door and the trunk or tailgate. This is the most common location for a vehicle's primary blind spots.

How to Check Blind Spots Correctly
Proper mirror adjustment reduces — but does not eliminate — blind spots. The standard guidance from traffic safety authorities is to position side mirrors so that your own vehicle's body is barely visible at the inner edge. This maximizes the outward coverage angle rather than duplicating what the rearview mirror already shows.
Even with well-adjusted mirrors, a brief shoulder check (turning your head roughly 45 degrees toward the relevant window) is necessary before changing lanes, merging, or pulling away from the curb. This direct visual sweep fills the gap that mirrors leave.
Blind Spot Monitors Are a Supplement, Not a Replacement
Blind spot monitoring systems are valuable tools, but they have documented detection gaps — particularly for narrow objects like bicycles and motorcycles, or vehicles approaching at high speed. Safety researchers and traffic authorities consistently recommend that drivers continue performing shoulder checks even when BSM is active. No current consumer technology fully replaces an attentive, scanning driver.
Establish a consistent sequence before any lateral move: signal, check the rearview mirror, check the relevant side mirror, perform the shoulder check, then complete the maneuver. This order matters because it gives other drivers time to react to your signal before you move.
Technology such as blind spot monitoring systems (typically indicated by a warning light in the mirror housing) can supplement this process, but should not replace it. Sensors have their own detection limits — they may not register cyclists, narrow motorcycles, or objects at the outer edge of their range. Treat any driver-assist feature as a backup, not a substitute.
